Remote Desktop Connection

What is Remote Desktop Connection?
Remote desktop technology allows you to connect and troubleshoot the remote computer by sitting at your computer. You can connect to your office computer by remote desktop utility and can have access to your office computer’s resources such as files, data, all the programs and the resources of your office network. The remote desktop connection utility is by default installed in the Windows XP professional and you can access it through the following method.
 
Start > All programs > Accessories > Communication > Remote Desktop Connection
How to Connect to the Remote Computer through Remote Desktop Connection
With the Remote desktop utility, you can connect to the remote computer, which has the Windows based operating system and that computer is a part of your network or you can connect it through the internet. The remote computer must be turned on in order to access it and you must have permission to access it
Use this path to connect the remote computer Start > All programs > Accessories > Communication > Remote Desktop Connection and provide the IP address or the name of the computer. Click connect and in the Log on to Windows dialog box, type your user name, password and domain if promoted.

Make sure that your firewall program is not blocking the remote desktop connection port. Windows firewall automatically opens the remote connections when you allow it. If you are using third party firewall software, make sure that this port 3389 is open.

Installing Client Software
To make your remote computer a as remote desktop client you need to install remote desktop connection or terminal service connection on it. Additionally your computer must be able to connect the remote computer by means of LAN, WAN, dialup or internet connection.

Installing Remote Desktop Connection on client computer
1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-drive
2. Click on the Additional tasks from the start page and then setup remote desktop connection.
3. In the remote Destkop Connection follow the instructions in the wizard until the setup is completed.
4. You can also install the latest version of the Remote Desktop Connection on the client computers from the Microsoft’s website. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads).

How to Troubleshoot the Remote computer
If you face this error message “Server Name Not Found Error Message” make sure that you have provided the exact network name of the remote computer or the IP address.
